- Biography: Sir Eric Matthew Gairy was the first Prime Minister of Grenada, serving from the island's independence in 1974 until 1979. Gairy was a controversial figure, known for his earlier role in leading the labor movement that fought for better wages and working conditions in the 1950s. He founded the Grenada United Labour Party (GULP) and was a charismatic but divisive leader. His tenure as Prime Minister was marked by accusations of corruption, authoritarianism, and the use of paramilitary groups to suppress opposition. His government was overthrown in a coup led by Maurice Bishop in 1979.
