Spicemas | 2024

Come with an open mind, dive into the culture, and enjoy the fun. If you’re likely to judge or complain, Grenada during carnival might not be for you. Even if you’re not part of the festivities, you’ll still feel the vibrant culture—like the lively music and masked revelers outside my Airbnb, which I loved. But if loud music isn’t your thing, consider visiting another time. I adore Grenadian music and Jab Jab, which is why I never miss Spicemas. The island’s stunning landscapes, delicious cuisine, and the unmatched warmth of the locals make it a place I always return to. Experience the pulsating rhythms of Spicemas! Jouvert | 2024

Jouvert, derived from the French Creole term "jour ouvert" meaning "daybreak," is a vibrant and symbolic event that signals the start of Caribbean carnival festivities, particularly in places like Grenada and Trinidad. Its origins trace back to the 18th century during the period of slavery, when enslaved Africans used the event as a form of resistance and expression of freedom. During Jouvert, revelers take to the streets in the early hours before dawn, covered in paint, mud, oil, or even molasses, symbolizing the breaking of chains and the dawn of freedom. The celebration is characterized by the infectious beats of soca, calypso, and steelpan music, creating an atmosphere of pure, unfiltered joy and communal spirit. The event also serves as a powerful reminder of the Caribbean’s history, blending African, French, and Caribbean influences into a unique cultural expression that honors the resilience and creativity of the region’s people.
