Grenadian Green Peas Soup

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb green peas (dried or fresh; if using dried, soak overnight)
  • 1 lb salted beef or meat of your choice (cut into chunks)
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1-inch piece of ginger, minced
  • 1-2 Scotch bonnet peppers (whole or chopped, depending on heat preference)
  • 2 large tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 bell pepper, chopped
  • 2 carrots, sliced
  • 2-3 stalks of celery, chopped
  • 1 medium potato, peeled and cubed
  • 1-2 sprigs of fresh thyme
  • 1/4 cup coconut milk
  • 4 cups chicken or beef broth
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 tbsp all-purpose seasoning
  • 1 tbsp curry powder (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1-2 tablespoons lime or lemon juice (optional, for added brightness)
  • Chopped parsley or cilantro for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Peas:

    • If using dried green peas, rinse them and soak them overnight in water. Drain and rinse again before using. If using fresh peas, just rinse them.
  2. Cook the Meat:

    • Heat the vegetable oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the chopped onion, garlic, and ginger, and sauté until softened and fragrant.
    • Add the chicken or beef chunks or meat of your choice.
    • Add the chopped tomatoes, bell pepper, carrots, celery, and potato. Stir to combine.
  3. Add Seasonings:

    • Add all-purpose seasoning, curry powder (if using), fresh thyme, and Scotch bonnet peppers. Stir to coat the meat and vegetables with the seasonings.
  4. Add Peas and Broth:

    • Add the soaked green peas (or fresh peas) to the pot. Pour in the chicken or beef broth and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and let it simmer for about 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until the peas are tender and the meat is cooked.
  5. Finish the Soup:

    • Stir in the coconut milk and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper to taste.
    • Add lime or lemon juice if desired for added brightness.
    • Remove the Scotch bonnet peppers if used whole.
  6. Serve:

    • Garnish with chopped parsley or cilantro if desired. Serve the soup hot with crusty bread or a side of your choice.
