Sorrel

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups dried sorrel (hibiscus) flowers or 4 cups fresh sorrel
  • 8 cups water
  • 1-2 inches fresh ginger, peeled and sliced
  • 3-4 whole cloves (optional)
  • 1 cinnamon stick (optional)
  • 1-2 cups sugar (to taste)
  • Juice of 1 lime (optional)
  • 1/2 cup rum (optional, for an adult version)
  • Ice for serving

Instructions:

  1. Boil the Water:

    • In a large pot, bring the water to a boil.
  2. Add the Ingredients:

    • Once the water is boiling, remove it from the heat. Add the dried or fresh sorrel, sliced ginger, cloves, and cinnamon stick (if using) to the pot.
  3. Steep the Sorrel:

    • Cover the pot and let the mixture steep for at least 2 hours. For a more intense flavor, you can let it steep overnight in the refrigerator.
  4. Strain the Mixture:

    • After steeping, strain the mixture through a fine sieve or cheesecloth into another container to remove the sorrel flowers and spices.
  5. Sweeten the Drink:

    • Add sugar to the strained liquid, stirring until it’s fully dissolved. Adjust the sweetness to your taste.
    • Add the lime juice if you’re using it, and stir to combine.
  6. Add Rum (Optional):

    • If making an adult version, stir in the rum.
  7. Chill and Serve:

    • Refrigerate the sorrel drink until it’s well chilled. Serve over ice in glasses.
  8. Garnish (Optional):

    • You can garnish with a slice of lime or a cinnamon stick for extra flair.

Enjoy your refreshing Sorrel Drink! This vibrant and flavorful beverage is perfect for festive occasions or anytime you want a taste of the Caribbean.
