Grenadian - Style Bush Tea

Ingredients:

  • 1-2 sprigs of fresh lemongrass (or 1-2 tsp dried lemongrass)
  • 1-2 sprigs of fresh mint (or 1-2 tsp dried mint)
  • 1-2 leaves of fresh basil (optional)
  • 1-2 leaves of fresh thyme
  • 1-2 slices of fresh ginger (optional)
  • 2-3 cups water
  • Honey or sugar to taste (optional)
  • Lime or lemon wedges for serving (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Herbs:

    • If using fresh herbs, rinse them thoroughly. Lightly bruise the lemongrass and mint to release their oils and flavors.
  2. Boil the Water:

    • In a medium saucepan, bring 2-3 cups of water to a boil.
  3. Add the Herbs:

    • Once the water is boiling, add the lemongrass, mint, basil (if using), thyme, and ginger slices (if using).
  4. Simmer:

    • Reduce the heat and let the herbs simmer for about 5-10 minutes. The longer you let it steep, the stronger the flavor will be.
  5. Strain the Tea:

    • Remove the saucepan from the heat. Strain the tea into cups or a teapot to remove the herbs.
  6. Sweeten (Optional):

    • Add honey or sugar to taste if you prefer a sweeter tea. Stir well to dissolve.
  7. Serve:

    • Serve the tea hot. You can also chill it and serve it over ice for a refreshing cold beverage.
    • Garnish with a wedge of lime or lemon if desired.
