Sorrel
Traditional & Healthy DrinksIngredients:
- 2 cups dried sorrel (hibiscus) flowers or 4 cups fresh sorrel
- 8 cups water
- 1-2 inches fresh ginger, peeled and sliced
- 3-4 whole cloves (optional)
- 1 cinnamon stick (optional)
- 1-2 cups sugar (to taste)
- Juice of 1 lime (optional)
- 1/2 cup rum (optional, for an adult version)
- Ice for serving
Instructions:
-
Boil the Water:
- In a large pot, bring the water to a boil.
-
Add the Ingredients:
- Once the water is boiling, remove it from the heat. Add the dried or fresh sorrel, sliced ginger, cloves, and cinnamon stick (if using) to the pot.
-
Steep the Sorrel:
- Cover the pot and let the mixture steep for at least 2 hours. For a more intense flavor, you can let it steep overnight in the refrigerator.
-
Strain the Mixture:
- After steeping, strain the mixture through a fine sieve or cheesecloth into another container to remove the sorrel flowers and spices.
-
Sweeten the Drink:
- Add sugar to the strained liquid, stirring until it’s fully dissolved. Adjust the sweetness to your taste.
- Add the lime juice if you’re using it, and stir to combine.
-
Add Rum (Optional):
- If making an adult version, stir in the rum.
-
Chill and Serve:
- Refrigerate the sorrel drink until it’s well chilled. Serve over ice in glasses.
-
Garnish (Optional):
- You can garnish with a slice of lime or a cinnamon stick for extra flair.
